Our Story
Craig Hewlett, Founder & CEO
Craig Hewlett, founder of Ash Point Software, was born and raised on a farm near Drayton Valley, Alberta, a town deeply rooted in Canada’s energy sector. He entered the oilfield in 2004, working for Hi West out of Drayton Valley. While on the rigs, he pursued a computer science degree, balancing his education while advancing to the role of Rig Manager.
Through his experience in the oilfield, Craig recognized a significant gap in navigation tools for field workers. At the time, most relied on dash-mounted GPS units or paper maps, often struggling to locate wellsites accurately. While smartphones were becoming more powerful in the early 2010s, no reliable, user-friendly solution existed for oil and gas professionals.
That’s when OilTrails, originally launched as Canadian Lease Locator, was born—a navigation tool designed specifically for Western Canada’s oilfield coordinate systems. Built to harness emerging mobile technology, it offered a solution that was both intuitive and effective.
