Quick guide
How to use the OilTrails LSD & NTS Finder
OilTrails Navigation combines online LSD lookup, NTS location search, map context, and oilfield route planning in one workspace. Use it to turn the location information you receive from dispatch, a work order, or a field contact into a mapped destination and a practical route.
- Search for the location. Choose General Search to type an LSD, NTS reference, town, or street address and access recent locations. Choose LSD or NTS to build a reference with the component pickers, then select Search. You can also select a point on the map.
- Review the map context. Confirm the result, inspect nearby roads, and switch between road, satellite, and terrain views. DLS and NTS grid overlays are available with eligible plans.
- Build an oilfield route. Set the location as an origin or destination, add waypoints when available, and review the route before sending a crew into the field.
- Save or share the plan. Keep important places in recents or collections, share the route, or prepare printable directions for an office-to-field handoff.
Find a lease or well site by LSD
Use the online lease locator to convert an LSD location to latitude and longitude for GPS use and see it on the map. Enter a legal land description such as 10-8-41-8W5 in the order LSD - Section - Township - Range - Meridian. LSD means Legal Subdivision within the Dominion Land Survey (DLS) system. You can also search a quarter section, such as NE-8-41-8W5. Review the mapped location and available well data before planning your route.
Reverse geocoding: find an LSD from the map
If you know the map location instead of the land description, sign in and double-click a point to look up its LSD or NTS reference where available. This reverse lookup helps identify lease locations from the map. If you already have a route open, you will be asked to confirm before the lookup clears it.
Supported searches and regions
Search Legal Land Description and LSD locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, NTS locations used in British Columbia and other parts of Western Canada, plus towns, addresses, and map coordinates. A single result can move directly into route planning without copying the location into another mapping tool. Searched locations can be seamlessly handed off to the OilTrails mobile app for navigation and field use.
